On June 11th 1963, Thích Quảng Đức, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, sat down in the middle of a busy intersection in Saigon, covered himself in gasoline and he then ignited a match, and set himself on fire. Đức burned to death in a matter of minutes, and he was immortalized in a famous photograph taken by a reporter who was in Vietnam in order to photograph the war. All those who saw this spectacle were taken by the fact that Duc did not make a sound while burning to death. Đức was protesting President Ngô Đình Diệm’s administration for oppressing the Buddhist religion.

The song is more about empowering myself physically amongst a masculine power, and the hate of feeling powerless, making light of masculine physical power, making it jovial and non-threatening. I took a typically violent cultural situation and made it pop and happy.”

as a person who’s been gang-raped, i have mixed feelings about imagery like this. it’s so important to warn people of the realities but so difficult to look at the fictionalized versions. i’d rather feel uncomfortable than not have the unfortunate message spread, though…

um, they’re showing more skin ‘cause mom wanted them to be princesses not because they chose to to themselves. i’m sure they would have preferred to dress in the complete outfits but had to compromise for mom’s own selfish fears…
